Blackfords Winter League.

The long awaited winter league finally got under way at Calf Heath on Saturday December 5th and by 3 pm a lot of Anglers could have been forgiven for wishing that it had been delayed a little longer. An excellent turn out for a winter league of thirty anglers gave it their all just to try and get a fish in the net on a very difficult day. But alas twenty two out of the thirty couldn’t manage a return for their endeavours.

Streets ahead on the day was mechanic Dave Nicholls and he was certainly firing on all cylinders as he roared to an easy win with 6 Bream for 19lb 15oz from peg 79.

Second spot went to Ian Davies with a hard earned 2lb 8oz of tiny skimmers at peg 13. Completing the frame were Pete Jones (peg 12) and Dave Ridgeway (peg 52) both with 1lb 8oz for joint 3rd.

Moving onto Kingswood for round 2 and the anglers were met with a water level some 10 inches above the pegs. But thankfully the fish were far more obliging than on Calf heath for the majority of the Anglers.

Winner on the day was Salop feeder specialist Brian Ashley who took 4 Bream and 2 Skimmers for an unassailable 18lb 8oz from peg 6. Cage feeder with ground bait and maggot did the business for Brian.

Ian Davies made it back to back second places and that puts him on a perfect 2 points in the league. Ian fished two lines on peg 41 but it was patience on his long line at 80m that paid off. Four good Bream registering 16lb 9oz was the reward, Ian also landed a stunning 18lb 8oz common Carp just for good measure although as we know Carp don’t count.

Third spot went to Ian’s son Steve who took 5 Bream to record a commendable 15lb 15oz from peg 4.

Next round Calf Heath Sat Jan 2nd.
